I have never understood those who name spring as their favorite season. To me, Autumn is the most beautiful and magical time of year. Autumn is not a time for endings, not to me–but a time for beginnings. You can even smell Autumn coming—in the pumpkin spices, in the brisk cinnamon air; in Vermont, it sneaks up on you quickly and before you know it, those lush mountain green leaves have changed their clothes to rich eggplant purple, vermilion, burgundy and amber, and glow against the sky. Autumn is long shadows, trees that look they were splashed with the most glorious of paints. Autumn is orange, vermilion, purple, red, green, amber–being outside is like walking inside a painting. So even though we are just now heading into Spring, I have Autumn on my mind, looking forward to the apple doughnuts and pumpkin pies and scarecrows stuffed with sweet-smelling straw festooned on almost every Vermonter’s lawn.
